Ranbir Kapoor unleashes sales pitch for Rocket Singh.

Bollywood Hot Bold Actor Ranbir Kapoor walked the red carpet last night for the world premiere of his latest upcoming film Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year and peddled his comedy with charm and brevity. Kapoor plays a fresh college graduate — an underachiever — grappling with his first job as a salesman.

Addressing a press conference earlier in the day, Kapoor said he was proud to be part of a film which was a departure from the run-of-the-mill Bollywood musicals. The film is one of the star attractions of the Dubai International Film Festival.

"Rocket Singh: Salesman Of the Year is not your quintessential song-and-dance film. It's an honest film made with lots of sincerity. We have tried to keep away from the formulaic stuff and it is realistic," said Kapoor. But he is quick to add that the film is not serious or brooding in nature. The Bollywood blue-blood — who hails from the powerful Kapoor dynasty — has enjoyed a phenomenal year with hits including Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Touted as the next-best-thing in Bollywood, Kapoor says his career decisions are dictated by his gut instincts.

"I don't have any method or formula to choose roles. If I am convinced that the director has an interesting story to tell, then I go by my gut instincts," says Kapoor.

Meanwhile, the film also brings together the hit pair — director Shimit Amin and writer Jaideep Sahni. Their previous outing Chak De! India turned out to be one of the biggest hits of 2007.

Challenging project

Known for his no-frill films, director Amin admits that making Rocket Singh: Salesman Of The Year was a challenging project.

"It was difficult to make a film without the usual song and dance. It was difficult to make a film stripped off the commercial elements.

"Very often, Bollywood films showcase the latest fashion or styles of wedding dresses for Indians living abroad," says Amin. The director was referring to the trend of Bollywood musicals that were a melange of Indian festivals and romance.

The plot thickens and the mystery deepens as Bollywood Hot Actress Shazahn Padamsee, the newbie rocketing into Bollywood with this Shimit Amin-directed flick, claims that there is indeed a kiss, but Ranbir refuses it.

According to Shazahn, she was never kept in the dark about the kiss as it was made clear in the script that she would have to kiss her co-star in a scene. On top of it, she claims that Ranbir made her “very comfortable” while shooting the kiss.

However, Ranbir has been saying something else. According to him, there wasn’t a kiss but a ‘cheat kiss’ in which camera was placed at such an angle that it seemed they were kissing.

The revelation might embarrass Shazahn a bit because it was she who first spoke about having kissed Ranbir in the film.

The squabble doesn’t end here. Gauhar Khan, another actress in the film, recently pulled the rug from under Shazahn’s feet by claiming that she has as much screen time in ‘Rocket Singh’ as Shazahn.

Bollywood Hot Actor Shah Rukh Khan might be the undisputed King of Bollywood, but it's Ranbir Kapoor who reigns in the world of PR strategy and popularity.

In a survey conducted by Eikona, the Specialized Content and PR Measurement Evaluation Unit division of TAM (Television Audience Measurement) across four cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore, Bollywood Hot Actor Ranbir Kapoor has got the maximum votes - 39 points out of 40 as the top actor who has garnered maximum publicity because of the publicity campaign generated for Wake Up Sid.

Bollywood Hot Actor Sanjay Dutt is a close second at (37). But strangely, SRK is at the bottom of the list (on number 10) in terms of PR and media coverage managing only 4 points out of 40. Even the media-shy Bollywood Hot Actor Salman Khan beats SRK with a score of 21 while Aamir tops Salman with 25. Hrithik Roshan comes third with a score of 32.

So what's the reason for this Kapoor boy's popularity?

Ranbir tells a daily, "I really don't know if I should be thankful or apologetic about it. I guess it's also because of the multiplex strike that three films of mine are releasing back to back. But I will make a conscious effort next time to space my releases."

In an interview to a daily, Karan Johar says, "If Ranbir tops the list it's because of his publicity done for Wake Up Sid for which I would like to thank his efficient publicist. I would also thank Ranbir for being so supportive about our PR strategy. Both Ranbir, my publicist, publicity designer Divya and Ayaan (Mukherjee) have all worked to promote and project Ranbir and Bollywood New Release Movie 2009 Wake Up Sid the correct manner. If Ranbir has created a buzz it's because we have targeted the demography of the youth and we all know that the youth dictates a large section of viewing audiences today. It's all about youth power."

Surprisingly, Karan's best friend Shah Rukh is seen at the bottom of the list. KJo defends SRK, "Shah Rukh is above any ratings. He won't come under any ratings. He is a national and international icon and not to be put into these ratings. Which product won't sell if Shah Rukh endorses it? He's almost the face of the entertainment world above and beyond ratings."
